Why Coaching Works

Organisations have traditionally spent money on people development in training and on the job mentoring. Over recent years many have recognised that whilst knowledge and skills are clearly very important, they are not the most powerful ingredient in driving motivation and performance. Forward looking organisations are unlocking their employees’ potential through investing in Coaching at both an individual and team level. Coaches create the environment for employees to alter their thinking, their actions and motivation to greater performance. Coaches bring new perspectives and challenges to evoke solutions in ways that no ‘insider’ in an organisation could.

Performance is affected by many hidden factors that people bottle up and find difficult to deal with. A skilled coach builds trust and takes confidential discussion with employees to explore these performance ‘affectors’. It is from this that employees feel safe to identify and implement changes that result in enhanced performance. There is a wealth of tangible evidence to support this.

Numerous studies have shown that productivity with training alone goes up 22% but when Coaching is added productivity rises to 88%. Most people can identify with the scenario of the rush of enthusiasm from training only for this to be quickly lost as there is little or no follow up mechanism within the organisations to implement and sustain the application of new skills. This is particularly prevalent in training related to interpersonal, management and leadership skills.

Teams very often waste time energy and a great deal of money through misunderstanding of the What? Who?, Where?, When? How? and most importantly Why? A lot of miscommunication! Teams are also often challenged by the lack of awareness of the impact of members’ behaviours. Coaching enables teams to address these issues in a powerful way that ultimately impacts positively on the P&L and morale.

In summary, Coaching accelerates personal and collective progress resulting in increased productivity, profitability and professionalism and satisfaction at work.
